This 6-week hybrid training program combines live online instruction with hands-on clinical training, giving students the opportunity to learn orthodontic concepts and then put those skills into practice.

Orthodontic assisting requires a different skill set than general dentistry.

Our Ortho Assistant Training Course goes beyond simply introducing orthodontic terminology. Students will build practical knowledge of orthodontic procedures, materials, instruments, workflow, patient care, and the clinical responsibilities they may encounter as part of an orthodontic team.

The goal?

Help experienced dental assistants become more confident, capable, and prepared to work in an orthodontic environment.

COURSE FORMAT

6-Week Hybrid Program

The program includes approximately:

36 Hours of Online Instruction
Learn orthodontic concepts, procedures, terminology, treatment workflow, patient communication, and clinical principles with an instructor in a live virtual classroom.

36 Hours of Hands-On Clinical Training
Apply what you’ve learned through hands-on training focused on orthodontic assisting skills, instruments, materials, procedures, and clinical workflow.

*72 Total Training Hours*

Course schedules will be designed with working dental assistants in mind.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

Course content is expected to include training in areas such as:

• Orthodontic terminology and tooth movement concepts
• Orthodontic instruments and armamentarium
• Brackets, bands, wires, elastics and orthodontic materials
• Understanding the orthodontic treatment sequence
• Chairside assisting during orthodontic procedures
• Clinical setup and breakdown
• Infection control in the orthodontic setting
• Orthodontic records and documentation
• Patient education and communication
• Appliance care and home-care instructions
• Common orthodontic procedures and appointments
• Clinical efficiency and orthodontic workflow
• Emergency visits and common orthodontic concerns
• Working effectively as part of the orthodontic team
• Hands-on orthodontic assisting skills and clinical practice

Final curriculum and clinical competencies will be published with the official course schedule.

WHO SHOULD TAKE THIS COURSE?

This program is intended for existing Dental Assistants (DAI or DAII) who want to expand their skills into orthodontics.

It may be a great fit if you:

• Currently work in general dentistry and want to transition into orthodontics
• Are considering applying for an orthodontic assisting position
• Recently joined an orthodontic practice and want additional training
• Want to expand your clinical skill set and career opportunities
• Want hands-on orthodontic training before stepping into a specialty practice

This is not an entry-level Dental Assisting program.

Students who are new to dental assisting should explore NC Dental U’s Dental Assisting Program first.

PREREQUISITES

Because this course is designed as advanced training for existing Dental Assistants, enrollment prerequisites will apply.

Anticipated prerequisites include:

• Current Dental Assistant experience/eligibility
• Radiology certification
• Current CPR certification
• Additional documentation or eligibility requirements as applicable
